8 Tips to Enhance Your Blog Post Content for Better SEO and Readability

by Sarah Conti | Marketing, Business

Creating engaging and helpful blog content in your posts is so important for attracting and retaining readers. However, it’s equally important to ensure that your blog posts are optimized for search engines (for better SEO) to increase visibility and reach a wider audience.

Below is a list of actionable steps you can apply to your blog post to increase your google ranking and help your readers stay focused.

Use Strong Headlines That Contain Power Words

Power words are words in a headline that trigger an emotional response and captivate the reader. Including them creates effective headlines that spark interest, get people to click, and overall help drive traffic to your website. (Learn more about Power Words)

Having a strong headline is so important because your article could contain valuable information that could help many people and/or generate sales for your business. But, if the headline isn’t resonating with your audience, you will not get the clicks.

Add a Table of Contents for User Experience and Better SEO

A table of contents does not only make navigation easier for your reader especially with long form content, it also helps the search engines know what your content is about by the keywords in your subheadlines.

By adding a table of contents, you add a better user experience for your reader which decreases the bounce rate. If readers are staying on your blog post longer, search engines know that the quality of the content you are posting is valuable.

Use Subheadings To Insert Keywords & To Break Up Text

Using subheadings strategically will break up lengthy blocks of text and is easier on the reader’s eyes. Not only does it organize your article in a way that is better for the reader, it also serves as a tool for adding your keywords which helps with search engine optimization (SEO).

These subheadings act as guidelines for both readers and search engine crawlers and allow them to really get a good sense of the theme of your article.

Break Up Body Text into Short Paragraphs for Readability

The better the user experience means better SEO which leads to better rankings for your article. Keep your paragraphs on the shorter side to break up the text for your reader. This allows the reader to skim through easier and gives the page some white space so your reader does not feel overwhelmed.

Make Sure Your Keyword/Keyword Phrase is Used Often

What does “often” mean? Many SEO experts say that good keyword density is 1-2%. So, basically that means 1-2 times for every 100 words. You want to sprinkle your keyword/keyword phrase throughout the article without overdoing it. You can read more about keyword frequency here. https://www.activecampaign.com/glossary/keyword-frequency

When you link to other reputable websites with good content that coincides with your topic, it tells the search engines that the information you are offering is reliable. This will help improve your rankings.

Take Into Account the Length Of Your Post

How long should your blog post be? Truly, it depends on the intent of your article. But, if we are focused on better SEO, then most experts agree that it should be in between 1500-2500 words. With that said, Semrush has a chart (View it here) that breaks it down by Content Type, Purpose, and Suggested Number of Words. Take a look if you’re interested!

Add Photos For Visual Appeal & Google Image Indexing

User experience and SEO go hand in hand when it comes to web pages. If you have visuals on your blog, it keeps the reader engaged. Make sure all graphics have intent and are not just decoration. The images should be relevant to your content and sized correctly. Images on a page are crawled and indexed by Google and other search engines. Make sure you have high quality optimized images, but don’t overload your page. According to HubSpot, you should use one image for every 350 words.

In conclusion, implementing the 8 suggestions that I have talked about above can significantly enhance your SEO and user readability. You will improve your chances of ranking higher and also provide a better experience for your readers which will increase the chances of returning visitors. The key is to find the right balance between your intent, better SEO practices, and reader engagement.
